8 Easy Steps to Insulate a Garage Door
Choose the Right Insulation
Before learning how to insulate your garage door, you should first know about insulation R-values. The R-value in insulation measures its effectiveness. A higher R-value means better energy efficiency and better climate control for your home. But these values vary based on the type, density, and thickness of the insulation material.
A high R-value garage door insulation will keep your garage cooler in summer and warmer in winter. However, they are often more expensive than insulation with low R-value. So, it is important to choose the insulation type according to your garage door for the best insulation while staying within budget.
Mark the Door
Once you get the right insulation and tools, you’re all set to start insulating a garage door. Next, you need to plan the fastener’s location. Make two marks that are vertically centered and 12-inches in from each side of your door panel.
Apply Double-Sided Tape
Now, you need to apply and firmly press the double-sided tape onto your marked spots on the garage door panels.
Attach Retainer Clips to Tape
After applying the tape, remove the front side peel from it and firmly press the retainer clips onto each tape segment.
Measure Door Panels
Next, you need to measure each panel of your garage door and note measures as they may not necessarily be the same size.
Cut Insulation to Size
After that, cut a piece of insulation for each panel. The size of the insulation piece should be 1-2 inches longer than your panel measurements. You can peel off the excess insulation later on. Some types of garage door insulation, like fiberglass insulation, can irritate your skin and eye. So make sure to wear safety glasses and gloves for your protection.
Tuck Insulation into the Door Panels
Next, tuck each insulation piece into your garage door panel according to the measurements that you’ve taken. The Vinyl side of each insulation should face outwards. For insulation with a reflective radiant barrier, make sure the reflective side is facing outward.
Fasten Retention Clips
Now, it’s time to fasten retention clips. Push the insulation against the door. You’ll feel the retention clips when you firmly press insulation against your door. Slice ½ inches slots through the insulation to make your retention clips pass through. Lastly, attach the retention clips’ front pieces to the back ones to make sure your garage door insulation panels stay in place.
